ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a fertility treatment that involves injecting a single sperm directly into an egg to facilitate fertilization. It is often used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and is typically recommended for individuals or couples experiencing male factor infertility or other issues with sperm quality. At RISAA IVF Center Nepal, we offer advanced ICSI services to help individuals and couples achieve their family-building goals.
ICSI is a multi-step process that begins with ovarian stimulation, during which the woman takes medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs have matured, they are retrieved through a minimally invasive surgical procedure called an egg retrieval. The retrieved eggs are then combined with sperm in a laboratory setting to create embryos.
During the ICSI procedure, a single sperm is selected and injected directly into the egg using a thin needle. The fertilized egg is then allowed to grow and develop in the laboratory for a few days before being transferred back into the woman’s uterus. The transfer is typically performed using a thin catheter, which is passed through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. If the embryo implants and begins to grow, it will develop into a baby.

ICSI is often recommended for individuals or couples experiencing a variety of fertility issues, including:
- Male factor infertility: This refers to problems with the man’s sperm, such as low sperm count or motility (movement). ICSI can help bypass these issues by injecting a single sperm directly into the egg.
- Unexplained infertility: In some cases, couples may have difficulty conceiving even though there is no obvious cause. ICSI can help increase the chances of pregnancy by bypassing any potential fertility issues.
- Previous failed IVF cycles: If previous IVF cycles have not resulted in a pregnancy, ICSI may be recommended to improve the chances of fertilization.
- Genetic disorders: If a couple is at risk of passing on a genetic disorder to their child, ICSI can be used in conjunction with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to select embryos that do not carry the genetic disorder.
ICSI is a highly effective fertility treatment, with success rates that depend on a variety of factors, including the woman’s age, the cause of infertility, and the quality of the embryos.
