Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
Intrauterine insemination, also known as IUI, is a fertility treatment that involves inserting sperm into a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. It is often used as a first-line treatment for couples experiencing infertility or for individuals who are using donor sperm. At RISAA IVF Center Nepal, we offer IUI as a safe and effective option for those seeking to start or grow their families.
During an IUI cycle, the woman undergoes ovarian stimulation to produce multiple eggs. This is done using medications that stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs rather than the single egg that is typically released during a natural menstrual cycle. Once the eggs have matured, they are retrieved through a minimally invasive surgical procedure called an egg retrieval.
The retrieved eggs are then combined with sperm in a laboratory setting to create embryos. The healthiest embryos are selected and transferred back into the woman’s uterus through the IUI procedure. The sperm is inserted into the uterus using a thin catheter, which is passed through the cervix and into the uterine cavity.
One of the main advantages of IUI is that it is a relatively simple and non-invasive procedure. It can be performed in a fertility clinic or doctor’s office and typically only takes a few minutes. It is also less expensive than other fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

IUI may be recommended for individuals or couples experiencing a variety of fertility issues, including:
- Male factor infertility: This refers to problems with the man’s sperm, such as low sperm count or motility (movement). IUI can help bypass these issues by directly introducing the sperm into the uterus.
- Unexplained infertility: In some cases, couples may have difficulty conceiving even though there is no obvious cause. IUI can help increase the chances of pregnancy by increasing the number of sperm available for fertilization.
- Endometriosis: This is a condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside of the uterus, often causing pain and fertility issues. IUI can help bypass blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, which can be a common complication of endometriosis.
- Ovulatory disorders: These are disorders that affect a woman’s ability to ovulate (release an egg). IUI can help increase the chances of pregnancy by timing the procedure to coincide with ovulation.
It’s important to note that IUI is not suitable for everyone and may not be effective in all cases. Your fertility specialist will be able to advise you on whether IUI is a good option for you based on your individual circumstances.
