In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment that involves fertilizing an egg outside of the body, in a laboratory setting. IVF is a multi-step process that begins with ovarian stimulation, during which the woman takes medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs have matured, they are retrieved through a minimally invasive surgical procedure called an egg retrieval. The retrieved eggs are then combined with sperm in a laboratory setting to create embryos.
The embryos are allowed to grow and develop in the laboratory for a few days before being transferred back into the woman’s uterus. The transfer is typically performed using a thin catheter, which is passed through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. If the embryo implants and begins to grow, it will develop into a baby.
